Episode 054: Taking Imperfect Action

This week’s episode is a pep talk that many of you need to hear. Are you a recovering perfectionist? Do you hold back on showing up until everything feels “perfect”? Do you compare yourself to other people?

If so…I hate to break this to you, but not everything is going to be perfect.

In marketing, clarity comes with action. When you’re not taking consistent action each day, you’re not getting clients. Your fear keeps you stuck and from finding people who need you the most.

What if you take the focus off of yourself and put it on the person who needs you? What does your dream client need? How can you help them solve their problem? If you start to put your focus on what really matters, you’ll find the courage to move forward.

Marketing is guess, test and revise. In order to get results, you need to put your content out there, see how people respond, and then refine it. Once you take a certain action, even if it doesn’t work out the way you expected, you’ll learn a lot from it. You won’t learn anything from doing nothing and trying to market in a vacuum.

You might be afraid to take action because you’re scared of doing the wrong thing. But what if the wrong thing is not taking any action at all? You’re not going to know what works unless you take action. Stop waiting for perfect – people need you now!

Here’s a simple exercise: write down all the things that you haven’t done in your marketing that you’re afraid to do. Just let it flow and be honest. Go back to your list and highlight the first thing you’re going to do this week. What is the first imperfect action that you’re going to take? Keep on doing this every week and adding new things to your list.

Successful people are the ones who fall down, get back up, and learn from their imperfect actions! They don’t quit. They just keep on moving forward and try something new every single day.

You have to take the first step regardless of how you feel. It doesn’t have to be perfect and you don’t have to be 100% confident before taking an action. Trust in your ability to figure it out. Your audience doesn’t need you to be perfect, they just need you to show up.
